Choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision - the photos will be on your wall forever so it's important you make the right choice! Today we are interviewing Hertfordshire Wedding photographer Becky Harley to find out a little more about her, and what she thinks makes a good wedding day! Becky is known for her gorgeous, natural photography, so enjoy getting to know her whilst being inspired by her work throughout the interview.
Tell me a little bit about you...
I’m Becky, a natural Hertfordshire wedding photographer based in Welwyn Garden City. I live here with my husband Pete, my little ginger menace of a cat Bernard, and our new baby girl.
I love to capture natural moments full of light, life and love in my photography, which will transport you back to that moment when you look at them in the years to come.
Why did you go into the wedding industry?
After getting married myself, I realised just how much I love weddings! A keen photographer already, I decided to follow my heart and start my own wedding photography business and the rest is history!
What makes your wedding business unique?
I’m a really relaxed person, and I think this reflects in my photography, and the way I work on a wedding day with my couples and their guests. I like to blend in and not run around like a mad thing on a wedding day, and many couples remark on how comfortable they feel with me taking their photo, even when they’ve said to me they normally hate having their picture taken! I know having your photo taken can be daunting, but I endeavour to make it really good fun. It’s all about your relationship with each other, which is why I won’t force anyone into weird or awkward poses!
Give me 3 words you would use to describe your business:
Natural, relaxed, creative
What is your most memorable moment from the weddings you have been at?
It’s so hard to pin point just one moment from the many weddings that I’ve photographed! One of the reasons I love weddings so much is how different and individual to each couple they are every single time. No matter if I’ve shot at the same venue more than once, I love to see how different couples put their individual stamp on their big day with fun and quirky ideas.
One of the most memorable moments from last year has to be at one wedding where, during the Father of the Bride’s speech, where he was recounting an embarrassing story involving the bride being spat on by a llama when she was little, several people around the tables emerged wearing llama heads! I had no idea it was going to happen, and neither did the bride, so her reaction was priceless!
What is the best thing you have seen as part of another wedding?
I always absolutely love it when couples have magicians at their weddings, and have had the pleasure of working with several over the years. Magicians make for some excellent reactions from your guests during cocktail hour, and really add an extra level of excitement to proceedings too!
What is your number one wedding planning tip?
Decide in advance which elements of your wedding day are the most important and budget to invest in those things, rather than spreading your budget thinly across lots of different things. When I got married, we knew that our photographer and our band were the things we wanted to get right, so we invested money in those first and then worked the budget around everything else.
From a photography perspective, I’d really encourage you to consider having a pre-wedding shoot. It’s such a lovely way of getting to know your photographer in advance of your big day, and it really makes a difference to your photographs on the wedding day as you’re already more comfortable with having your photo taken on the day. Plus, it’s so easy these days just to grab your phone for a quick selfie, that having some nice photographs of you both together as a couple is a really great thing to do anyway!
What prices do your wedding packages cost?
I have a number of different packages, depending on your requirements in terms of length of coverage, and whether you’d like to preserve your wedding memories in an album. Full day packages start from £1,400.
